Styling & Restyling My Built-Ins

All it takes is one small thing to inspire me to re-do an entire house.
This time, a little light inspired me to re-do my built-ins. I found a picture light (similar here) at my favorite vintage store for a whopping $20. 2 hours later, plus a Salvation Army run for cheap books, and voilà, a revamped living room.

It was a Monday well spent.

Scenes From The Weekend

Happy Monday!!
Brad is on vacation this week (FINALLY), so I'm happy to say that my Monday will be spent around the house with him. There's nothing worse than working on Monday, so I refuse to. :)

How was your weekend?? Mine was just lovely! My whole family got together at my grandparent's house in South Carolina. We were supposed to leave Friday night, but Brad didn't get home from work until 5am Saturday morning. Have I mentioned his hours are ridiculous??

This meant that my Friday night was free, so I went with some girls to a local hot spot, Brasserie, and sipped on my favorite rosé, Hogwash.

Saturday, I woke Brad up after just a few hours of sleep & we drove to SC. We did the 'uge'- golf cart rides with the pups, eat Grandma's food, drink a lot, eat more of Grandma's food, go to the beach, eat Grandma's food. Basically my Grandmother, at any given time, could feed an army with what she's cooked on a daily basis.

My favorite part of this weekend was hanging out with my little love bug, Emma. I think I have the cutest niece in the whole world. (And smartest!) She turned 9 months old on Saturday, and she's walking all over the place. She's a girl on the move, but she's still so sweet & cuddly. I just love her!

We got back to Wilmington Sunday evening. The weather was perfection, so we went for a bike ride through the hood.

Sunday night was cuddle central in our house.

I'm a firm believer in this quote.

Friday Five

1. Loving these fabrics by Bob Collins and Sons

2. Couldn't agree more with Joanna Goddard
Image the horror if your host didn't leave you one of these in a time of need.

3. This is my most favorite room right now.
It's my go-to picture for inspiration. Isn't it fab?

4. I'm a face picker (confession #2 of the week),
and this stuff has worked wonders on my skin.

5. Finally, Shake It Off... It's Friday, after all!

Obsessing Over...

Obsessing over these booties from Anthropologie. They're the perfect Fall bootie, in my opinion. And even better? They're on sale!

I'm all about comfortable / cute shoes on the weekend. I'm contemplating, very seriously, these Joie sneakers for the Fall / Winter.

I also like them in this color

I've been eyeing the Sister Parish pottery from Furbish. I love the blue & white (duh) and the Burmese pattern. I know I would never get sick of looking at it.

Gap Fit work out clothing is really doing it for me. I bought a few tanks & sports bras recently, and I can't get enough. Don't get me wrong, Lululemon is still the ish, but for a fraction of the price, I'll keep buying Gap Fit... And I'm thinking I need this tank. In every color.

Sew Crazy

I've recently taken up a new hobby: sewing. I'm seriously so in love with it. I try to sew every night I'm home. It's become my favorite past time. I'm an 80-year-old stuck in a 28-year-old body, and I ain't even mad at it.

Before a couple months ago, I didn't even know how to use a sewing machine. Thanks to my Granny, I'm now a pro still learning a lot. I started with pillows, I've made some curtains, I've hemmed quite a few things, and altered some of my clothing. I plan on reupholstering my living room ottoman & making a bed skirt in the near future.

For now, my sofa is loving my new hobby because she's getting newly accessorized!
I bought this hmong fabric from Etsy for pretty cheap, plus the navy linen backing from a fabric store, a few zippers, some thread, and voila- 3 new pillows for less than $25 each.

Up next, maybe this ticking stripe fabric to add more of a southern traditional element??

P.S. I promise to start using a better camera to take these pictures.

Straw & Hay With Gorgonzola

Last night, I made Ina Garten's Straw & Hay Gorgonzola pasta,
and OMG. I LOVED it. Brad loved it. It was rich and fattening, and I ate every bite.
The only meat is prosciutto, so it can easily be made vegetarian for "Meatless Monday".
You'd just need to add a little more salt.

Ingredients

Kosher salt
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
4 ounces prosciutto, cut crosswise in 1/2-inch-thick matchsticks
1 cup chopped yellow onion
1 tablespoon minces garlic
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
4 ounces Gorgonzola dolce, crumbled
1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
8 to 10 ounces tagliatelle or fettucine, such as Cipriani
2 cups frozen peas, defrosted
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus extra for serving
1/4 cup julienned fresh basil leaves

Directions

Fil a large pot with water, add 1 tablespoon of salt, and bring to a boil

Meanwhile, melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add the prosciutto and cook for 5 minutes, separating the slices with tongs, until crisp. Remove to a plate and set aside. Add the remaining tablespoon of butter and the onion to the sauté pan, and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender. Add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute. Add the cream, Gorgonzola, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and the pepper and bring the sauce to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, until thickened. Turn off the heat.

When the sauce is almost done, add the pasta to the pot of boiling water and cook according to the package directions. Reserve 1 cup of the pasta water and drain the pasta, allowing some of the water to remain. Pour the pasta into the pan with the sauce. Add the peas, Parmesan, basil and prosciutto and toss well. If the pasta seems dry, add some of the reserved pasta water.

Taste for seasonings and serve hot with extra Parmesan.

Scenes From The Weekend

Morning friends. I hope you're all still with me after all this time... If not, maybe you'll find your way back soon. :)

This weekend was quite enjoyable for no good reason. It was relaxing. Friday night, Brad & I went to the movies for the 2nd time in over a year. We saw Let's Be Cops. It was pretty good... If you're looking for a non-serious movie and want to laugh, you'll enjoy this one too.

I cannot get enough of my new Joie sandals! Seriously, I wear them 5 days a week.

The black band is all leather and the spotted one is calf hair. I'm obsessed. They go with absolutely everything. I'm so ready for fall, and these give me the feeling of fall with the colors and calf hair while still keeping my feeties from getting too hot!

I fixed my favorite snack yesterday- blueberries, Concord grapes & fresh Parmesan cheese chunks. So easy. So yummy. Just add a glass of vino, and I could live off this for the rest of my life.

My Sunday afternoon was spent at Brad's last baseball game of the season. I'm a snacker, so my favorite snack went with me. My genius friend saves her Talenti gelato containers & stores berries and snacks in there, so now I'm doing the same. Thanks, Genius Friend!

Hey Pitcher, Pitcher!

I ordered this Baby Foot mask yesterday. I've heard amazing things, and seriously, my feet are absolutely disgusting. It's bad. Confession: I have not had a pedicure in almost 2 years. There's no excuse other than I just don't like sitting somewhere for an hour when there are other things to be done. Baby Foot is supposed to peel off all of the dead skin. Stay tuned for the review...

2014 In A Nutshell

Let's use today to catch up, shall we? In my absence over the past 8 months, I...

Became a brunette

Traveled to Palm Beach

Twice.

Found some spun fiberglass for my back porch

Attended a wedding

And another wedding

And another wedding

Chopped off my hair

Continued to decorate my house little by little

Spent a lovely weekend in Skaneateles, NY

And in between family visits, playing with friends, and doing my wifey duties of cooking and cleaning, I worked.

I felt my hiatus from blogging was much needed. It became another chore, which is the last thing I wanted. I'm back at it, though. I'll be blogging because I want to and not because I feel that I have to. I'm excited to share my life, my decorating, my cooking, and my shopping with you all once again. I missed this place!
